More than 150 Christian leaders, most of them conservative evangelicals and traditionalist Roman Catholics, issued a joint declaration Friday reaffirming their opposition to abortion and gay marriage and pledging to protect religious freedoms.

The 4,700-word document, called "The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience," sounds familiar themes from political and social debates over the health care overhaul and gay marriage battles.

While acknowledging that "Christians and our institutions have too often scandalously failed to uphold the institution of marriage," the group rejects same-sex marriage. The declaration states that opening a legal door for gay marriage would do the same for "polyamorous partnerships, polygamous households, even adult brothers, sisters, or brothers and sisters living in incestuous relationships."

President Barack Obama’s desire to reduce the need for abortion is "a commendable goal," but his proposals are likely to increase the number of elective abortions, the document contends.

"The present administration is led and staffed by those who want to make abortions legal at any stage of fetal development, and who want to provide abortions at taxpayer expense," it says.

Obama has said he wants to strike a balance on abortion coverage in the health care overhaul.

The declaration also cites threats to health care workers’ conscience clauses and anti-discrimination statutes it argues impinge on religious freedoms.

Signatories include 15 Roman Catholic bishops, including New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Washington Archbishop Donald Wuerl; Focus on the Family founder James Dobson; National Association of Evangelicals president Leith Anderson; seminary leaders, professors and pastors.

Actually, teenage brothers and sisters living in the same house, sometimes the same room, is what truly paves the way to incest. I do miss my sister! :)

Gay marriage leads to incest? Are you kidding? From historical evidence, it appears that being a Catholic priest leads to incest.

Oh, God would be so proud of you for making such a divine comment and sharing your ignorance with all of God’s children. I’m sure he would be very proud.

Let us remind everyone once again that gay and lesbian committed couples are blessings to tens of thousands of foster children, while Catholic priests and bishops, along with Mormon Fundamentalist leaders like those running the Texas Polygamist Ranch, are proven pedophiles who have tormented and molested children under the banner of righteousness for decades, and continue to do so today. God is on our side.

The State of Alabama has made gay marriage illegal, but has yet to make marriage between siblings illegal. If we wanted to clean up the morality of our country, can we please start with the "God and Guns" bible belt where people are willing to "shoot to kill" anyone wishing to remove the ten commandments statue from a county courthouse... "Thou shalt not kill" being the most obvious of the things wrong with that line of thinking....

This is from the same crowd that ran the Inquisition for 600 years. No change in their mindset over that time.

Did you know about this Jew who wanted his dog circumcised? The Jew explained that this dog saved his life and got him out of the concentration camp. The rabbi couldn’t do it. So the guy offered one million dollars to do it. The rabbi asked what kind of a dog this was and the guy said it was a Dobberman. The Rabbi said, Dobberman? Dobberman, isn’t that a Jewish name?
