"Cupcakes," Eytan Fox's latest, is a riff on the "Eurovision" singing contest. It's a candy-colored musical film, and an unrepentant crowdpleaser; musical sequences are even played to the camera, as if inviting the audience to join. Even the script manages to deftly avoid "drama," focusing on the character's hang-out sessions and song-and-dance exploits, not on conflict. This is joyous, pastel-colored, Hollywood-influenced filmmaking - not one of Fox's typical coming-out melodramas, but a delectable delight instead.
