One of the most creative stage works of 2013 was the Dave Malloy musical, "Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812." Taken from an except of Tolstoy’s classic, "War and Peace," this new musical is currently enjoying a highly successful run at Kazino’s in New York’s Theater District. However, for those of us unable to get there, Ghostlight Records has just released the complete soundtrack to the musical, a two-disc set of the electro-pop opera, featuring the original cast.

Malloy has created a truly innovative score. Equal parts Tom Waits-folk, Amanda Palmer-goth and traditional Russian folk song, the multi-award winning show tells the story of Natasha and her time spent waiting for her betrothed, Andrey, to return home from the war. An effectively streamlined opening number ("Prologue") tells us all that we need to know about the characters, from who’s good (Sonya), and young (Natasha) to who’s a slut (Pierre’s wife, Helene) and who is hot (Helene’s brother, Anatole). Pierre is Andrey’s best friend and is played by Malloy himself. That’s fortunately all one needs to know about the cast prior to the story, for which we are thankful considering the source material.

The talented cast features Phillipa Soo (Lexi from NBC’s "Smash") as Natasha, Lucas Steele as Anatole, and Amber Gray as Helene. The package contains a 48-page booklet with pictures and complete lyrics, as well as a synopsis and a glowing testimonial from writer Steven Suskin. Malloy’s writing is perfect in creating the right ambiance to enjoy the story, and should provide a strong reference for future productions, after the current one concludes in January.
