The first time around EDM remix producer Avicii laid it on us, the Swedish mix-meister stayed true to his roots and to the arrangements of the original beats he was delivering. The 2013 release of "True" was an introduction to Avicii’s distinctly "cutty" EDM style -- the same electro-synth sound that grabbed the attention of Madonna during her MDNA sessions. With the "remix" take on his new offering "True: Avicii By Avicii" the artist is hoping his audience is so familiar with his style at the turntables that they’ll come along on this more rhythmic run.

The set list wasn’t broke the first time around, so Avicii wisely reenlisted the same artists and tracks by adding a little more buoyancy this time around. These more compelling -- some much more uplifting -- remixes take the edge out of EDM, which has dominated on the club scene for way too long. On Avicii’s True: Avicii By Avicii the same is still true -- these productions are purely the sonic signature of this mega-producer, but it’s beautifully rewarding to realize that he has a range beyond the tubular drones of most EDM.

With the opening track, Aloe Blacc’s hit "Wake Me Up", Avicii delivers something of a more celebratory anthem that has a lofty sense and density worthy of a Friday night frenzy. Adam Lambert’s deep vocal resonance is missing from this redo of "Lay Me Down" which thumps with a deep bass drive and then kicks into overdrive with a piano intro, before the EDM takes over and the light show can begin! "Liar Liar" is among the more propelling remixes on the album, but the more slow-driving "Shame On Me" is a unique listen.

Comparing this album to the first is simply apples to oranges, but if audiences have only ever equated Avicii with EDM, then on this version of True: Avicii By Avicii one thing is for certain -- don’t judge a DJ by his beats per minute.

Avicii "True: Avicii By Avicii"is available on disc and on digital download for $8.99
