The eighteen year marriage of the machismo actor, Jack Cassidy, and the successful ingĂ©nue (and eventual iconic television mom), Shirley Jones, not only yielded three sons, including teen idol, Shaun Cassidy and Broadway’s Patrick Cassidy, but also included a wealth of records featuring the two soothing voices. However, "Marriage Type Love," a collection of melodies about couples and positive relationships, appeared to have slipped through the cracks of time, not getting released when it was originally recorded by the couple in 1959. Thankfully, Masterworks Broadway is now releasing this charming time capsule, and the aural results create an image of the duo of budding superstars musically relaxing on the couch by a late-night fire, enjoying each other’s aura and reminiscing about their happiness.

The twelve songs on the release are an entertaining mixed bag of endearing standards (the title song, from the rare Rodgers and Hammerstein flop, "Me and Juliet," and the apex of couples’ anthems, Sammy Cahn’s "Love and Marriage"), swinging tomes (the Gershwin’s "Our Love is Here to Stay," and "Love is the Reason") to sensual tunes to share drinks with before romancing the evening away (Cassidy solo on Rodgers and Hart’s "I Married an Angel," and Jones on "Two Sleepy People").

Cassidy’s voice was always known for its crooner sound, and hearing his vocals bring a lament in remembering what could’ve been had he not died prematurely in an accidental fire in 1976. But Jones is actually the wonderful surprise here. Known primarily for her roles in "The Music Man" and "Brigadoon," and subsequently as Shirley Partridge with her stepson, David Cassidy on "The Partridge Family," Jones’ soprano is passionately featured through her vocals, even though she’s quoted as saying, in the fascinating liner notes, that she doesn’t recall making this record!

Marty Gold and his Orchestra provide the variety of arrangements, creating a nostalgic recording that will provide a nice soundtrack to those night times worth reliving over and over.
