From the moment you "drop the needle" (a.k.a. "press play") on this new release from the duo known as "Myron & E," you’ll picture yourself in that late nightclub, with men in suits and fedoras and ladies in flower-print, knee-length dresses, alternating between slow-motion grinds and dance moves to the smooth beats that permeate "Broadway," the debut set from these soulful performers.
Myron Glasper and Eric "E da Boss" Cooke make up this talented team of singer and DJ who bring their cross-country influences to their record, with Myron’s roots in the Los Angeles sound becoming complete once Cooke moved from New York (by way of Virginia) to join his partner in the Bay Area. With the instrumental augmentation of Finland’s Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators, the act has put together a high-quality, hip-swingin’ ten-song compilation. They are currently touring in support of their album, along with other artists on the Stones Throw label, and deserve to be heard.
Their sound is a fresh take on the classic days of Al Green, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, and the funky soul of the 1960s and 1970s Bay Area. The first single from the album, "If I Gave You My Love," receives inspiration from Redding’s "Dock of the Bay." "Cold Game" owes its string arrangements to Berry Gordy and the Motown sound, and there’s even "Do It Do It Disco," which could have been spun by the DJ’s playing 12" records from the Casablanca label in 1978. Stones Throw Records, the 17-year old label fronted by Peanut Butter Wolf, is also pressing a limited number of LP’s for this release. If you (still) own a record player, complete your immersion in this "Broadway" sound by picking up this release on vinyl.
