Rockabilly Riot: Live From The Planet
There have been only a few popular artists who have embraced traditionally "older" styles of music, and have assumed a responsibility and dedication to that genre so that it continues to remain in our modern consciousness. Eric Clapton has achieved this with his continued commitment to blues music, especially the songs of Robert Johnson. Brian Setzer is another artist who has remained consistent to the rock-and-roll songs from the early days of the 1950’s and 1960’s, and has coupled it with his innate ability to create new songs in this style, allowing him to infuse both a traditional and contemporary repertoire into his live performances.
After several releases using the monster sound of his big band, Setzer streams it down for his latest project, "Rockabilly Riot! Live From The Planet," using the unique instrumentation of two stand-up basses, two drummers, one piano, and himself on guitars. Taken from his most recent around-the-world concert tour, the mix of original and cover songs make for a foot-stompin’ good time.
Highlights of the group’s set include visits to Setzer’s work with "The Stray Cats" in the 1980’s (the electric "Drive Like Lightning (Crash Like Thunder)" and the hit rocker "Rumble in Brighton"), featuring his fellow Cat, "Slim Jim" Phantom, on drums, along with tributes to Johnny Cash ("Folsom Prison Blues"), Carl Perkins ("Put Your Cat Clothes On"), Jerry Lee Lewis ("Great Balls of Fire") and Billy "The Kid" Emerson’s ever-popular classic, "Red Hot."
This recording is sixty minutes of upbeat, danceable tunes from a dedicated aficionado of the origins of rock, so grab your "cat" or "chick" and go spin ’em!
