Gay Couples in Court in Alabama: Give Us Marriage Licenses

Gay couples in Alabama are continuing their fight for marriage licenses in the wake of a federal judge's decision overturning the state's ban on same-sex marriages.

U.S. District Judge Callie Granade scheduled a hearing Thursday afternoon on a complaint brought by four couples who've been unable to marry in South Alabama's Mobile County.

Last month, Granade ruled Alabama's ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. Mobile Probate Judge Don Davis shut down license operations altogether after the state's chief justice, Roy Moore, issued a conflicting order to refuse the licenses.

The couples want Granade to direct Davis to let them wed.

More than 20 of Alabama's 67 counties are issuing same-sex marriage licenses. Others aren't.

Attorneys for the couples hope Granade's ruling will sway other judges statewide to issue the licenses.
