The underrated and little seen action film "Jack Reacher" which is based on the popular series of novels and starring international superstar Tom Cruise is now available for everyone to discover. A slick and fun thriller, Jack Reacher is an original that is fun and enigmatic in equal measure. Unfortunately, due to the Newtown, CT shootings, the film might have left a bad taste in people’s mouths as it opens with a sniper attack on civilians of all ages. But it’s definitely worth checking out. A combination of "Drive" and "The French Connection," there are terrific action sequences and a clever device as to how Reacher goes about trying to solve the ambiguities of the crimes. Cruise is terrific here as he lets his hair down a bit and gives himself over to the fun of it all.Commentary by Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie is technically interesting, if a bit humorless and earnest.
Special features are standard here, but nothing to write home about:
Commentary by composer Joe Kraemer will be interesting for future composers, but unnecessary for an entire feature.
When the Man Comes Around - a 25-minute featurette on the making of the film including interviews with Cruise, McQuarrie, author Lee Childs, and others. There’s some great info on casting and long work days that is a good education for those that want to work in production or just those curious about the movie-making process.
You Do Not Mess with Jack Reacher: Combat & Weapons - a fairly interesting 11-minute featurette on the fight sequences.
The Reacher Phenomnenon - a look at the fandom of "Reacher Creatures" and Child’s process in writing the books.
