Just as Fox released a Blu-ray of the legendary 1957 psychodrama "The Three Faces of Eve," starring Joanne Woodward, Warner Brothers responded with "All the President’s Men," in which the key player is Bob Woodward---no relation! The latter Woodward, along with fellow Washington Post investigative reporter Carl Bernstein, launched an intensive investigation into the Watergate break-in and subsequent governmental cover-up. Their painstaking work resulted in the arrest of dozens involved, and, ultimately, the resignation of President Nixon.

Recognizing the cinematic potential of the Watergate story, Robert Redford soon began production on a film version. In addition to producing the film, Redford himself portrayed Woodward, and chose Dustin Hoffman for Bernstein. Redford’s remarkable research resulted in the precision of every fact and detail, lending the film incredible realism. The supporting cast included some of the biggest acting chops of the day: Jason Robards, Martin Balsam, Hal Holbrooke and Jane Alexander. Alan Pakula was selected to direct, and he fashioned a well-crafted film, pervaded by a consistent air of tension and foreboding. Lending further veracity, the film is interspersed with footage of original television and radio broadcasts, as well as news clippings.

The "All the President’s Men" Blu-ray is an absolute essential for anyone interested in this dramatic, but unfortunate, epoch in American political history.

Forty years after Watergate, Fox has released a superb two-disc special edition Blu-ray which makes it apparent that, even after four decades, the story remains thoroughly vital and fascinating. Disc 1 contains a fine, high-def transfer of the movie, and generous special features, including a featurette made during the filming, and several from prior DVD editions. The second disc contains a riveting, new, full-length, Blu-ray documentary which is as thorough and carefully researched as the film itself. Woodward, Bernstein and Ben Bradlee, their editor, were all interviewed, as were all the surviving cast members, Nixon White House officials, and participants in the Senate hearings. Undoubtedly, this new edition is one of the most richly annotated Blu-ray releases issued to date.
