"Sparkle" is a remake of the 1976 movie of the same name. This time it is set in 1960’s Detroit during Motown’s heyday. The plot has highly predictable plot lines. The movie opens in a club called Discovery where Sparkle (Jordin Sparks) and her sister, Sister Tami (Carmen Ejogo) are literally discovered by their manager Stix (Derek Luke). They start the girl-group "Sister and Her Sisters" with their actual sister Dolores (Tika Sumpter). The three experience small amounts of fame and love, suffer disaster and then rise from the ashes to find success.

At times, the sound dubbing does not match up with the movie playback. Yet, the performance sequences are catchy and sexy with an appropriately dramatic finale featuring original music by R. Kelly. Houston only sings once in the entire movie but her performance is breathtaking.

Whitney Houston was and still is a national treasure. The DVD Special Features include a touching tribute from the cast and crew celebrating Houston’s legacy as an actress, musician and icon. "A Dream Come True: Bringing the Story to the Big Screen" details the movie’s journey from script, casting and production to opening night. If one is looking for a special treat, there is also the option to watch the movie with commentary from director Salim Akil who gives detailed anecdotes of the movie-making process.
