Butter is a nasty comedic gem that combines political satire and biting commentaries on racism, sexuality, and class. The film stars Jennifer Garner as Laura Pickler, an over-the-top conservative nut-job who wants to maintain her and her husband’s respected outward appearance in their small Iowa town. So when her Butter sculptor husband (Ty Burrell) is not allowed to compete in the annual Butter Sculpting competition (because he has won 15 years in a row) Laura decides to carry the torch herself.
But a small African-American girl (Yara Shahidi) recently adopted by a loving white couple (Rob Corddry and Alicia Silverston) decides to enter the competition and becomes Laura’s greatest threat. Add in the town stripper (hilariously played by Olivia Wilde) who has reasons of her own to take down Laura, and the games are most definitely on.
Riotous, crude, pointed, and a bit over-stuffed, "Butter" is still really entertaining and shows a much different side of Garner than we’ve seen before. Watch for Hugh Jackman’s (not so successful) small role as her ex-boyfriend car salesman Boyd.
Special features are slim with a fairly amusing Gag Reel and a smattering of Deleted and Extended Scenes. You might not buy it for the extras, but it’s a pretty repeatable comedy that you might just find yourself lending out to your friends.
