Transgender Prostitute Beats Up Would-Be Robber
A teen tough thinking that a cross-dressing hooker would be an easy mark found himself on the receiving end of a beating when he tried to rob him, according to an Oct. 26 story published in the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Rufus Bowman, 16, targeted Joshua Bumpus as a robbery victim, luring him into an alley under the pretense of wanting to solicit his services. But Bumpus, who stands 6’ 1" and weighs 290 pounds according to jail records, wasn’t intimidated by the 5’ 7" youth, even though Bowman had a gun-and used it. Bowman shot Bumpus once, but that didn’t stop Bumpus, who wrested the gun from Bowman’s grasp and proceeded to "beat the daylights out of him," in the words of Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Ryan Nelson.
Friends of the prostitute pitched in and beat Bowman as well. The fracas was going on when police arrived at the scene, alerted by others on the street. Said Nelson, "The cops said it was one of their more memorable arrests of their lives."
Bowman was charged with possessing a gun despite not being allowed to do so due to a previous arrest, and with felonious assault. In a plea deal, Bowman agreed to plead guilty to felonious assault, and the weapons charge was dropped. He was sentenced to three years.
Nelson opined that Bowman had "picked the wrong prostitute to rob."
A recent independent film, Ticked Off Trannies With Knives, depicts a revenge scenario in which several cross-dressing entertainers wreak vengeance on a small gang of homophobic thugs for murdering a friend. But in real life, not all cases in which trans people strike back are so clear-cut. In 2001, a trans prostitute named Jamie Cid was put on trial for murder in Ventura, Calif. Cid had beaten a 78-year-old man named Jack Jamar at Jamar’s home; the beating victim later died.
Prosecutors said that Cid had attacked Jamar in the process of robbing him, but Cid’s lawyer said that Jamar had pulled a gun on Cid, who was acting in self-defense.
Ten years earlier, child actor turned radio host Danny Bonaduce was arrested in Phoenix for having allegedly beaten and robbed a trans prostitute. Bonaduce reportedly claimed that he had hired the prostitute believing that he was a woman. Upon realizing that the prostitute was a man, Bonaduce tried to expel him from his car, and an altercation ensued.
