After dining at a local cafe, a North Carolina lesbian couple were startled to be handed a letter from the restaurant’s owner that that condemned homosexuality.

The Queen City - named after the wife of King George II, who ruled the colonies - is best known as a business city, home to Duke Energy and the place where Hugh McColl started a small bank, which grew to become the Bank of America.

Delegates in town for the convention, which begins Sept. 3, will find several places in and around Charlotte where they can soak up a little political history.

LGBT North Carolinians continue to fight a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships in the state. Voters will vote on Amendment One in May after lawmakers approved the referendum earlier this month.
