Dawn Ennis is Don Again

Tuesday Aug 6, 2013

Several months after ABC News assignment editor Don Ennis very publicly came out as transgender in May, the ten year veteran of the newsroom has apparently had a change of heart, owning the experience to a bout of "transient global amnesia." The New York Post reports.

In an email to friends and colleagues released yesterday by, Ennis who claims to have suffered amnesia, states "I accused my wife of playing some kind of cruel joke, dressing me up in a wig and bra and making fake ID's with the name 'Dawn' on it. ... It became obvious this was not the case once I took off the bra - and discovered two reasons I was wearing one," he wrote, referring to his hormone-induced breasts. Ennis goes on to state "I am writing to let you know I'm changing my Don Ennis," he wrote. "That will be my name again, now and forever. And it appears I'm not transgender after all."

Ennis made headlines last May when he publically came out to his co-workers and the media at large - announcing plans to leave his wife of seventeen years along with his wish to be called "Dawn." As reported in New York Magazine's Daily Intelligencer, Ennis - who reportedly was shopping his story for a book deal, was overcome with the support s/he received co-workers including ABC News President Ben Sherwood, ""I'm overwhelmed by the strong support I've received from my coworkers, and I'm looking forward to telling my story when I'm ready."

In his email published by The New York Post, Ennis acknowledged the support of his friends and co-workers yester in his email - "I'm asking all of you who accepted me as a transgender to now understand: I was misdiagnosed," he wrote. "I am already using the men's room and dressing accordingly...It's so odd to be experiencing this from the other side; as recently as last Friday, I felt I was indeed a woman, in my mind, body and soul. Even though I will not wear the wig or the makeup or the skirts again, I promise to remain a strong straight ally, a supporter of diversity and an advocate for equal rights and other LGBT issues including same-sex marriage."

While even the conservative media was supportive of Ennis in May for bravely coming out as transgender, he is not enjoying the same across-the-board support for his recent announcement.

An article published today in called the Ennis story "a setback for the transgender community, which struggles with ongoing discrimination, ostracization and misinformation" calling the announcement "One man's sensationally-rendered and totally idiosyncratic experience with his own gender, and not something that should be extrapolated to mean that the experience of trans people is anything less than entirely credible."

I get how a Transgendered person may realize that they are not, after all. I have no prob with that. What I do have a problem with is .... "as recently as last Friday, I felt I was indeed a woman, in my mind, body and soul" ...... "... Even though I will not wear the wig or the makeup or the skirts again"... So, you are TG then not TG, back to a man but still feel like a woman inside? I know a few real TGs and what I’m reading here sounds very fishy. Is it possible that this person has just been doing all of this to build a script for some kind of movie? Can you say, CA-CHING CA-CHING! $$$$ Just throw’n that out there. It’s been my experience that true TGs don’t do a double, triple flip and around again thing. They are consistent in who they are. This guy Don doesn’t seem credible to me at all. Like Judge Judy so aptly puts it, if it doesn’t make sense, it’s not true.
