Members of GOProud, an organization of ultra-conservative gay Republicans, announced on Wednesday whom they would be endorsing in in the U.S. Senate race in Wisconsin: Tommy Thompson, a Republican former governor with a strong anti-gay track record. Moreover, he is running against a popular lesbian congresswoman, Democrat Tammy Baldwin, who has been a champion for LGBT rights.

The right-wing group released a statement that praises Thompson because he "championed innovative, conservative reforms" to fix Wisconsin’s "entrenched unemployment, entitlement spending and inadequate public education."

GOProud Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia called Thompson "a commonsense conservative who will focus on creating jobs and growing the economy for all Wisconsin."

Thompson had also served as secretary of Health and Human Services under President George W. Bush.

"I appreciate the support of GOProud," Thompson said, "and look forward to the growing coalition of broad support joining me on the pathway to victory in November."

GOProud’s chief strategist and co-founder, Christopher Barron, criticized Baldwin. He called her "a rubber stamp for the disastrous big government policies of the far left. Tammy Baldwin will be a Senator of the special interests, the D.C. insiders, and the most liberal activists," he added. "Tommy Thompson will be a senator for the people of Wisconsin."

When it comes to LGBT issues, GOProud maintained that Thompson "consistently opposed a discriminatory Federal Marriage Amendment and is a long-time supporter of Wisconsin’s non-discrimination law." But a recent Think Progress article points out that the Republican has the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would offer protections for LGBT Americans from workplace discrimination.

He is on record as saying that an employer should be able to fire a worker because of his or her sexual orientation during a debate in 2007. But the next day, Thompson retracted his remarks. "I didn’t hear the question properly and I apologize," he claimed "It’s not my position. There should be no discrimination in the workplace, and I have never believed that."

Think Progress also notes that the Republican does not support marriage equality and is a strong endorser of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

If elected, Baldwin will be the first openly gay member of the U.S. Senate. The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund and the LPAC, a new super PAC created by lesbians, are active in her campaign fundraising.

Why does the gay community continue to make themselves "one issue voters". This is no less dangerous and not politically thoughtful or intellectually honest. My hat is off to GOProud for trying to accomplish the goal of saying "Hey, there are libertarian and fiscally conservative homosexuals out here too! Just because we are homosexual does NOT mean that you have to vote liberal or Democrat because that is the party that shows up and glad hands you the most at your parades and makes you the most promises. Social and religious conservatives are the ones that need to be checked, not the average, normal Joe (or JoAnne) who just wants to be left alone and able to keep as much money as we can and achieve the American dream and perhaps have their own business too, someday. Obama and liberal economic policies are not the answer. Also, after looking at GOProud’s webiste I would hardly call them "ultra conservative"....you guys need to get a bit more credible.

I wish the Southern Poverty Law Center would declare GOProud a hate group.

Wow! All 3 of their membership voted against her... those silly fools....

GOProud has a death wish. As a gay man, I have only feelings of disgust for them.

Self-loathing defined. I’d rather vote for a write-in, stranger with minimal experience than vote for someone that hates me and doesn’t respect me.

As a gay man i look at many issues when voting. and i belive that a thriving middle class and helping the less fortunate. The gop believes in none of this. i think that only people who should be behind the gop is rich white men cause those the are the only people who benefit from.gop rule. and even if gays only voted on this one issue nothing wrong with that. why would a gay person vote for a group that believes we are second class citizens and everything wrong with society. that would be like Jews backing Hitler or a black person backing the grand dragon of the kkk just because u don’t like their stand on them being against who you are. Any gay that votes republican is self loathing.

Listening to Thompson’s remarks that he opposed measures against employment discrimination makes it very clear he would not protect any equality and civil rights for LGBT people. What would the reaction be if he were to say that an employer has a right to fire Christians, African-Americans, Hispanics, Jews, Muslims... As for GOProud, they remind me too much of Jewish people in Germany who thought that Hitler would not persecute the Jewish people because Germany is a civilized nation. FOR LGBT PEOPLE WHO FEEL THAT PROTECTING OUR EQUALITY RIGHTS ARE UNIMPORTANT COMPARED TO OTHER ISSUES: Don’t be fooled. If our civil, equality and human rights can be denied, that is one more step toward being recriminalized as a people. Furthermore, we will not be the last group to have our rights denied.

This is no surprise. GOProud are rich white men voting in their economic best interests. Their wealth insulates them from most of the dangers of anti-gay discrimination. What is more shocking and frustrating is the huge number of poor and working class white people who continue to support Republicans, against their own economic interests, because of ignorance, racism, homophobia, etc.
