For pop-songstress BEX, it’s all about raising the volume, and shaking the treble, guaranteeing that the dance floor is in perpetual motion. The New York, Long Island native has been moving, inspiring and entertaining audiences for as long as anyone can remember.

Her single "Life of the Party" hit a home run with the club crowd putting BEX in the Billboard Dance Top 50. The rigors of the music business, with the surmountable pressure of delivering a deserving follow-up drove the songwriter to cautiously approach what that next hit would be. The result is an electro-grinding anthem "What You Are."

"I was thinking a lot about ’What is perfection?’ and striving to be perfect," she says. "And realized that there is no such thing as perfect." Rather than play with Barbie dolls, the consummate artist would rather have been coloring in the figure’s iconic blonde locks with bold markers before stealing the keys to the dolly’s cherry red convertible coup taking them for a spin! "This is a celebration song," BEX insists. "It’s about showing all of what you have inside."

With past hit summer songs that inspired club goers to accept that they weren’t little monsters but born this way, and still other California girls that suggested we are as vibrant as a firework, BEX is making certain her audience accepts what you are is good enough. "I’m hoping the song will inspire the listeners to put away their inhibitions," is BEX’s motivation. "Really letting your individuality shine through. Show everyone what it is that makes you unique."

True Colors

BEX says "What You Are" is also about love and bringing down those defenses around your heart. "When you want to be with someone, you don’t want them to have any kind of cover. You want to see someone who is rough around the edges. I want to know what’s the dirty stuff that they have going on." Does that mean the pop-princess prefers her bad boys over a true gentleman? "I’ve been with my share of bad boys," she laughs, "but I like someone who owns who they are. If they have flaws...it makes them human."

With social issues at the very center of our world, even pop artists like BEX are becoming important components encouraging their listeners to stand up to bullies and accept the differences that makes one unique. "We’re seeing more characters portrayed in film and television shows that are more like real people," BEX says. "There are kids, like on "Glee" who are celebrating their unusual qualities. I’ve always done my own thing - it’s something I’m not scared of."

BEX also insists that she’s turned that ’misfit quality’ to her advantage; setting her pop-star image and mystique to the beat of her own drum. "I’m a pretty down to earth person in my everyday. I just have an unusual job." BEX embraces the afforded fashion eccentricity and glamour of the pop world. She pushes the envelope and has collaborated with image makers including celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz, who literally pulled back the layers to reveal the true BEX for her recent record’s single. "I love getting all beautified -- as long as my fans know that is not how I wake up everyday."

Making Music Together

Beyond the runway ready image, BEX thrives in the studio teaming up with noted dance music producers/remixers Mike Rizzo and Mr. Mig. Both worked on BEX’s current track "What You Are". "The collaboration is part of the fun," she says. "One person doesn’t have the best or the right ideas. It’s way more fun to be challenged."

Along with her relentless ambition, it’s that challenge in her career that continues to propel BEX forward. "You can be ambitious, but you have to be realistic," she says. "Be goal oriented and you will accomplish things. I want to continue straight forward."

Riding that forward momentum, BEX is returning to the main stage at Splash premiering her new track. "In my very early days, Splash was very kind to have me. It’s really cool to come back, especially with the New York City debut of "What You Are". I am very psyched!"

BEX raises the temperature on the hottest Friday Night in Chelsea when she hits Mark Nelson’s F*Word at Splash on May 3 @ 1am performing her hits and new single "What You Are".

Splash is located at 50 West 17th Street, NYC. For more info go to www.splashbar.com.
