Michael Alig, the co-founder of the 90s New York City’s nightlife Club Kid scene, is scheduled to leave prison on May 5 after serving 17-years for the murder and dismemberment of fellow Club Kid Andre "Angel" Melendez in 1996, according to Black Book.

Alig has been eligible for parole since 2006, but has been denied until now.

According to Black Book, upon his release, Alig, 47, will be staying with a close friend and "has been recruited for creative jobs by many." Black Book goes on to say: "His transition to the real world will be eased by a support group who, for the most part, have stuck by him for more than a decade and a half. Michael has never used a computer or cellphone, but he has remained keenly aware of the world we live in. There is no chance that he will return to clubs as a way of life, but he will paint and write, and as always, try to impact the way we think."

The Huffington Post points out, however, that Alig has been active on Twitter, writing Wednesday: "19 days of punishment left, then it’s upward & onward on the road to redemption. #fastforward."

On April 13, he tweeted: "Only 22 days till the most monumental occasion in the history of Western civilization: That’s right, MY RELEASE DATE IS MAY 5th! #openbars."

According to his Twitter bio, Alig is the "former king of the club kids and now prisoner at Mid-State, where I’m finishing my book."

More information regarding his release are detailed in in his blog.

The murder, along with Alig’s drug use and rise to fame, was made popular in the 2003 film "Party Monster," starring Macaulay Culkin as Alig and Seth Green as close friend and Club Kid, James St. James. "Party Monster" was based off the book "Disco Bloodbath," By James St. James.
